Import Export Code (IEC) is the 10-digit identification number issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) that every importer and exporter in India needs to legally transact cross-border. With India's MSME export sector growing 18% YoY and platforms like Amazon Global Selling, Shopify, and Etsy making cross-border e-commerce accessible to one-person businesses, IEC has become as essential as a GSTIN for many SMEs. This is the complete IEC application guide for 2026.
What is IEC and when do I actually need one?
IEC is a unique alphanumeric code linked to your PAN that permits import-export of goods or services through Indian customs. As of the 2022 amendment, the IEC is the same as your PAN (with checksum) — meaning one PAN = one IEC. You need an IEC if you:
- Import any goods into India for resale or use (not personal use)
- Export any goods or services from India
- Receive foreign currency as payment for goods or services rendered abroad (e.g. freelancers, SaaS exporters)
- Pay foreign currency to a vendor abroad in connection with imports
- Operate an export-oriented unit (EOU) or in an SEZ
You do NOT need IEC for personal imports (gifts, courier shipments under ₹1 lakh), services consumed personally abroad, or remittances unrelated to trade.
How is IEC different from a GSTIN?
| Aspect | IEC | GSTIN |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | DGFT (Ministry of Commerce) | CBIC (Ministry of Finance) |
| Purpose | Cross-border trade authorisation | Domestic indirect tax compliance |
| Mandatory threshold | Any cross-border transaction | ₹20 lakh / ₹40 lakh turnover |
| Format | 10-digit (same as PAN) | 15-character alphanumeric |
| Renewal | Annual update mandatory | Permanent unless cancelled |
Most cross-border traders need BOTH — IEC for customs declarations and GSTIN for refund of input tax credit on exports (zero-rated supplies).
What documents are required for IEC application?
- PAN card of the entity (for company / LLP / firm) or individual proprietor
- Aadhaar card of the proprietor / authorised signatory
- Address proof of the business premises (electricity bill / rent agreement)
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate confirming current account in the business's name
- Digital photograph of the applicant
- For Pvt Ltd / LLP: Certificate of Incorporation
- For partnership firms: Partnership Deed
That's the entire list. Notably, no physical premises inspection, no minimum turnover proof, no GSTIN requirement at IEC application stage.
How do I actually apply for IEC online?
- Visit dgft.gov.in → "Apply for IEC"
- Sign up with PAN, mobile, and email (verify both via OTP)
- Fill the ANF 2A application form — basic business and address details
- Upload PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, and cancelled cheque (PDF/JPEG, max 5MB each)
- Pay the ₹500 government fee online (debit/credit card, net banking, UPI)
- Sign the application using Aadhaar e-sign OR Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
- Submit — IEC is typically issued within 1-3 working days
You can download the IEC certificate immediately from the DGFT portal once issued.
What is the annual IEC update requirement?
Since 2021, IEC holders must update / confirm IEC details every year between April and June. The update can be done online by logging into DGFT, verifying address and bank details, and clicking "Confirm". Failing to do this for any year leads to automatic deactivation of the IEC — and any customs clearance attempted thereafter is rejected at the port.
Reactivation is possible but requires fresh ANF 2A submission and a ₹500 fee.
Common mistakes that delay IEC issuance
- Bank account not in business name — for proprietorship, current account must be in the proprietor's name with "Trading as" / business reference
- Address mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar, and rent agreement
- Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar — Aadhaar e-sign won't work
- Wrong category selection — picking "Merchant Exporter" vs "Manufacturer Exporter" has implications for export incentives later
- IEC + AD code mismatch at customs port — Authorised Dealer code from your bank must be registered with the same IEC before first export
