Overview
FSSAI Licence is mandatory under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for any business involved in food — manufacturing, processing, packaging, distributing, importing/exporting, storing, transporting, or selling food (including online aggregator deliveries). Issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, the FSSAI number is a 14-digit code printed on every food product label in India. Selling food without FSSAI is a criminal offence punishable by up to 6 months in jail plus ₹5 lakh fine.
There are three FSSAI levels, picked by turnover and operation scale: Basic FSSAI Registration (turnover up to ₹12 lakh, single-unit petty operators — chaat counter, tiffin service, home baker), State FSSAI Licence (₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore, restaurants, mid-sized manufacturers, cloud kitchens, food trucks), and Central FSSAI Licence (above ₹20 crore, multi-state operations, importers, exporters, e-commerce sellers like Swiggy/Zomato/Amazon Fresh).
